THE MIDWAY VETERANS OF NO RIGHT TO WIN:

ALVIN B. KERNAN

Left: Kernan in 1944 as an aviation cadet.  Right: Kernan in 1994.

Alvin Kernan joined the Roundtable shortly before the writing of No Right to Win and immediately became one of its major contributors.  He had served as an aviation ordnanceman with VT-6 aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) at Midway, and subsequently became a TBF aircrewman.  He flew with the first launch of carrier-borne night fighters in 1943, as the turret gunner of a radar-equipped TBF accompanying Hellcats on the hunt for Japanese bombers.  That experience included one highly dramatic sortie that earned Kernan the Navy Cross.  For details on that, see Crossing the Line, his acclaimed wartime biography.
