It is to be held at the Renaissance resort hotel at World Golf Village, located on I-95 on the west side of St. Augustine, Florida.  They just completed a 10 million dollar renovation project at the hotel on the grounds of the famous World Golf Village and Golf Hall of Fame.  You can take a "virtual tour" of the facility:  click here.

Regular room rates:  $59.00 (plus 2 breakfast vouchers)

Suite room rates:  $89.00 (plus 2 breakfast vouchers)

Reservations need to be made by:  May 6, 2010

Phone:  800-266-9432, Monday – Friday, 8 am - 9 pm.

Ask for:  Battle of Midway dinner, Renaissance Resort, World Golf Village

I suggest you make your reservations as soon as possible.

We are hoping that, with the excellent room rates and all the attractions close by, the vets attending will want to make it a two-day event.  There will be no driving home late at night in the dark from the center of a big city.

The Renaissance hotel has all facilities on the ground floor.  Everything opens up to the ground level outside with over 300 free parking spaces, and free valet parking for the vets.  We are gearing everything for the comfort of our vets, our heroes.

O-4 to O-5 - $45

O-6 and above - $55

2.  SANTA CLAUS IN MARCH

Ed. note:  for our newer members, Ted “Santa” Kraver has for many years provided WW2 books free to Roundtable members.  He buys them cheap at an annual book auction and mails them to anyone who asks.  Ted’s generosity is unique to the Roundtable, and it’s about the best deal on books that can be found anywhere.  To request your books, contact him directly as shown in your “new issue” announcement.

21 February 2010

From:  Ted Kraver

Arizona

Your Book Santa has been at it again.  The WW2 section of the VNSA book sale produced about 30 books for the Roundtable.  The cold start in line at 5:30 AM was warmed up by my 12-year old granddaughter and son Chuck, who joined me at 7:00.  Doors were opened at 8:00 and the surge took me into the scrum at the WW2 tables.  I hung a flashlight around my neck this time and it was a lot easier checking titles as I crawled under the tables to check the boxes of books.  Next year—pads for my 71-year old knees.

The drill is the same as past years:  Books and shipping are on me, my give-back for a delightful time on the BOM Roundtable.  You decide which books you want and email back to me.   In a couple of weeks I will send them out by Media Mail in the U.S., regular mail outside of the U.S.  The remainder will be listed again once more to wrap it up.  So enjoy!

LINK OF THE WEEK

This is a followup to the Link of the Week in our last issue, which featured the personal after-action report by Marine F2A pilot William Brooks.  It’s John Greaves’ fine painting of the action described by Brooks in his report, during which he was forced to dual a Zero over Midway with his landing gear partly lowered.

Click here for the link of the week.

EDITOR’S NOTES

~  I didn’t include the link to the Bill Brooks painting in the last issue because John Greaves’ web site was temporarily down.  You can find his home page again at the usual URL:  http://www.johngreavesart.ca/

~  Roundtable member Al Simons in Florida is seeking information on VS-6 commander W. E. Gallaher, something beyond what’s reported in the BOM histories.  If you have info on Gallaher before or after the battle, Al would like to hear from you—contact him as shown in your “new issue” announcement.

~  I just received a copy of The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose’s new book version of the HBO miniseries.  Hugh says the book has some unique content not found in the video production (the BOM, for example), so I’m looking forward very much to getting started on it.  A review will be forthcoming.

~  Kate Dolan in Australia says The Pacific (the book, that is) is available there from Angus & Robertson, and also at K-Mart.  There is exceptional interest in Australia since a portion of the miniseries was filmed in and near Melbourne.
